Let’s read Titus 2 at face value, word for word. I grew up in the church and I can say I never heard these Scriptures taught on and talked about. I ask myself and others, why is this not talked about? Maybe it is and I am just not in those circles who do? Dysfunction and relational issues are ramped among Believers yet we skip the very teachings on these subjects? My wife and I took a marriage class recently and for 16 weeks, Titus 2 and many other verses around this topic were skipped and never discussed.
For many Christ followers, Paul’s words are taken and read with great reverence, especially in the more “charismatic” space of the Body of Christ. We are ok with reading and teaching on Christ’ nature, the fruits and gifts of the Spirit, and all other topics covered by Paul — yet, we seem to like to skip the very Scripture the Holy Spirit breathed regarding marriage, relationships, male and females.
I’ve listened to teachers skip right over Pauls teaching on the gift of tongues and I’ve listened to teachers skip right over Paul’s words on the roles of husband and wife, men and women. Why are we not teaching these topics and Scriptures from the “Pulpit?” Why is the Body of Christ not being trained up as Paul says below, for the “Sake of the Gospel.” God has a Way that is good and we can’t rebel against and assume there will be life elsewhere.
Men, its time time to train other men, young and old— in the Way of Christ. Women, its time to train up other women, young and old— in the Way of Christ. Not in the way of your past experience, education, teaching, culture and even popular church culture is preaching, but in the way of Scripture, the way of the Word of God. It’s time to submit to God’s way, His will and no longer to our feelings and emotions. It’s time we submit to God’s way without conditions and control, and surrender our projections, pain and experience to be crucified and burned by the fire and purity of God. It’s for HIS WILL to be done, NOT ours.
Doing Good for the Sake of the Gospel
2 You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
3 Likewise, Older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
6 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. 7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
9 Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.
11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.
