Strengths v. Calling

God will often call you to things that aren’t your strengths. Even as believers, we often automate “our calling” in direct parallel with our natural gifting and skill sets. But, I am learning, this very thinking can keep us from what God is actually leading and calling us to do in real time. This magnifies the importance of hearing God’s voice and being led by Holy Spirit.

As Christ followers, we are wired to be led by Holy Spirit first and foremost. Not our intellect or feelings, but God’s Spirit attached to our spirit. His Spirit may lead us into something that appears in direct opposition to our skills and natural gifting, our “strengths.” Submitting to His Way requires us laying down our addiction to our own understanding, strength and reasoning.

Maybe God’s reasoning, among many, is for us to be forced to trust Him? To be pressed and forced to lean on His strength, wisdom and Presence? Maybe He is teaching us again, to be dependent upon Him alone and not ourselves? To let go again, fully?

As I read in a friend’s writing recently, maybe you are pastor but God has continually spoken business or entrepreneurship to and over you? But you haven’t surrendered to His actual call and leading over your life? Maybe you are trying to force your own will into His, and lean on your own understanding and natural skills?

Maybe you are an engineer or electrician but God keeps bringing up the word “artist” to you? Maybe your heart has been beating for something that scares you but you can’t escape the possibility that it may be God’s whisper?

Action: Prayer – God, what are YOU calling me to right now? What are YOU calling me to do and go after? Forgive me of my control and not surrendering to YOUR will and way.
